netzero
I have seen Netzero 3G enhanced dial-up advertising on TV as being as fast as broadband. Does anyone have any experience with this or comments? Where I live, I can only get glacial dial-up. I would really like something faster.

I just saw a commercial for NetZero’s latest gimmick, NetZero High Speed 3G. They are saying it is so fast, you won’t believe it’s not broadband. I had to check out the site and find the legal mumbo-jumbo, and here it is:
Speed reference based upon comparison to nationally available dial-up ISPs. NetZero HiSpeed 3G accelerates certain web page text and graphics when compared to standard dial-up Internet service. Actual results may vary. Some web pages such as secure or encrypted web pages will not be accelerated. NetZero HiSpeed 3G is not a broadband service and actual data transmission rates are not faster than standard dial-up Internet service. Transmission of files including, without limitation, streaming audio or video, digital photographs, MP3 or other music files, executable files and other downloads, is not faster using NetZero HiSpeed 3G than with standard dial-up service. NetZero HiSpeed 3G may not be compatible with proxy based software or services such as content filters or firewalls. NetZero HiSpeed 3G is only compatible with Platinum service and specified browsers. Available only for Windows.
So, they are basically caching, and possibly pre-fetching in a similar manner to the Google Toolbar. The thing is, it only seems to speed up text, which doesn’t really need to be sped up in the first place.
I am not sure which "accelerator" Net0 uses but we use Propel Accelerator and It does speed up All text - HTML, markup, and javascript,Most graphics & photos - including jpeg and gif images,Most banner ads - including animated gif images and Macromedia Flash content.
All browser-based emails All emails that contain images - even when read in a dedicated email program MP3 files, executables & other files - when downloaded from within your web browser (depending on the quality of your connection)
And... we offer it free with every dial up account. ;)
Lone,
If conventional wired broadband is not available where you live you should consider ADSL through Satellite. It is not as fast as conventional broadband, but it sure is faster than dial-up 56kb and ISDN 128kb. Last time i checked it was anywhere from 256kb-512kb (26 kilobytes compared to 5 kilobytes dialup). If you live in the continental US this serivce is offered by many ISP's. It does not come cheap though, compared to other ISP's, expect to pay anywhere from 50-100 dollars a month for a typical Satellite service.

But for most people 50-100 $ a month is a bit extreme expecially when you consider "most" people connect just to check thier email and maybe some shopping. I can't see where paying that much for ADSL in the whole scheme of things makes any sense. If you are working using the internet as in web design or things like that then you will need a fast connection. Dial up does meet most people's needs just fine.
