A Review About Propel from CBS News

Only about 10 percent of Americans have signed up for a cable modem or DSL even though such broadband services greatly increase the speed of surfing the Net. Some people just don't want to spend the money -- typically between $39 and $50 a month -- while others live in an area where service isn't available.

Now there is an alternative that, though not as fast as broadband, is at least twice the speed of a standard modem. And you don't need any special lines or equipment to use it.

Installation is a breeze. I had the software installed and was enjoying the extra speed in a matter of minutes. The service works on Windows XP, 98, ME, 2000 and NT 4.0, and Mac.

Unlike many programs that claim to speed up Web surfing, this one actually works. It does it in three ways. First, it compresses graphics and text so that they are delivered more quickly to your PC. It also caches (stores) frequently used Web pages so that they pop up almost instantaneously. Finally, while you're online, the Propel software maintains a persistent connection between your PC and the company's servers so that you don't have to re-establish a connection each time your browser makes a request.

There is nothing unusual about any of these technologies. Internet Explorer and Netscape already cache pages, and there are lots of programs out there that will compress graphics. Yet Propel is able to do these things far more intelligently because of the cooperation between the software on your machine and the company's servers.

***Propel Web Accelerator Version 5 Known Problems

The following problems are known to exist in Version 5.0:
Running the Propel Accelerator Client on a computer where Norton Antispam 2004 is also running may disable the Norton Antispam software. To resolve this issue, turn off email acceleration in the Propel Accelerator Client. From the Propel Accelerator Client menu, select Options, and then choose the Advanced tab. Click the Email Acceleration check box to clear it.

Occasionally, Diagnostics take a long time to complete. If you run Diagnostics and the tests appear to hang, do not click Stop to end the tests. Instead, wait until you see a notification in the Diagnostics window that the tests did not complete successfully. Close the Diagnostics window and run Diagnostics again if necessary.

The Mozilla Firefox browser cannot display some JPEG images. When Firefox encounters a bad image, it displays text instead of the actual image. This problem exists in Firefox and occurs whether or not you are using the Propel Accelerator Client.

When your email client is receiving email, you should notice that the state of the Propel Accelerator icon changes to the alternating arrows that indicate acceleration. After the mail delivery is complete, the icon should change back to the blue propeller that indicates that Propel Accelerator is waiting to accelerate content. If your email client is configured for IMAP, the icon may not change back to the blue propeller after the client finishes receiving email. The icon will continue to show the alternating arrows. You can confirm that the email delivery is complete by opening your Inbox and confirming that all of the new messages slated for delivery (as shown by the number next to your Inbox folder) are present

Why do I get the error: Page Not Found?

Browser Configuration Issue

As part of the acceleration process, Propel Accelerator uses a "proxy server" on your computer. A proxy server is a local program that manages Web traffic in your browser. The proxy server is configured in your browser. If the proxy setting is not configured correctly in your browser you may receive Page Not Found error.
